The Alchemist's Apprentice by Dave Duncan

Entertaining, relatively quick read, although I skipped some stuff in the middle. The protagonist is egotistical and causes most of his own trouble by having a smart mouth and a quick mind (and vice versa), but there is a bit of fantasy thrown in with the possibility of demons and the fortune-telling/divination. Set in Italy in the Renaissance years, with humor and adventure.
