Sequel to Divergent
Tris, now on the run as war erupts, attempts to figure out what information is so vital, or so dangerous, that some factions would destroy others just to contain it.
The existence of the Divergent becomes more common knowledge as Erudite openly teams with Dauntless traitors to destroy Abnegation, attacking Candor and Amity when they attempt to shield the Divergent or negotiate for power, and using technology to turn members of other factions into killers by inducing "simulations" in which their minds can be controlled. Only the Divergent are immune, a fact which Erudite attempts to change by experimenting on Tris to find the correct biochemical mix.
The remaining Dauntless, including Tris and Four/Tobias partner with the factionless, led by Four's supposedly-dead mother, to break into Erudite headquarters - the factionless with the intent to paralyze Erudite by destroying all the data (and secretly to end the faction system), and Tris with the intent to save what her parents died trying to protect, data which indicates the factions were designed to save the outside society from self-destruction, and that the time for them to leave the city is now.
Tagline from the book: "One choice can destroy you."
I had not read the first one in a while, and it took me a bit to remember what all had happened in the first book, especially the ending, which had seemed rushed to me at the time. But I did figure it out as I went along, although readers starting with Insurgent will have a tough time because there are frequent references to characters and incidents from the first novel.
SLJ grades 9 and up, and I concur due to lots of violence that might be hard for younger readers to put in context. Not gory, but lots of people die as shots are fired and throats are slit.
